With no surviving males and no ability to reproduce naturally, the species is functionally extinct. Yet, hope remains in a surprising source: in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

This groundbreaking approach may be the only way to prevent the Northern white rhino from disappearing forever. However, it’s a race against time, with challenges.

Progress in IVF For Rhinos

Scientists working with the BioRescue team have made remarkable strides in IVF for rhinos. Over the past few years, they’ve harvested 29 oocytes from Najin and Fatu. These eggs were carefully transported to Italy, where researchers successfully matured them into embryos.

IVF technology has seen success in closely related species. In a world-first, scientists achieved a Southern white rhino pregnancy through embryo transfer. The embryo was developed in a lab and implanted into a surrogate. This milestone demonstrates that the process is possible—but applying it to Northern white rhinos adds layers of complexity.

“This is a critical step forward,” said a researcher involved in the project. “We now have a clear path to saving the species, but the clock is ticking.”

The High Stakes of Innovation

Despite these advancements, the challenges are immense. A previous attempt at IVF ended in tragedy when a surrogate mother died just 70 days into her pregnancy due to a bacterial infection. This loss underscored the fragility of the process and the risks involved.

Adding to the complications, Najin and Fatu are not suitable candidates to carry pregnancies themselves. This means researchers must rely on Southern white rhinos as surrogates. While this species is more abundant, finding healthy and compatible candidates is a painstaking task.

“There’s no room for error,” said another scientist on the project. “We’re working with an extremely limited genetic pool, and every step has to be executed perfectly.”

Each embryo represents a lifeline for the Northern white rhino. The ultimate goal is to establish a small but viable population that can eventually be reintroduced into the wild. However, even in the best-case scenario, this is a process that will take decades.
