The carcass of a humpback whale washed up onto South Africa’s Umhlanga beach, only about 100m from the lighthouse.
Swimming has been temporarily banned, as authorities fear that the carcass may attract sharks.
Steve Edwards, metro police director said that sometimes whales make their way to shore when they are sick according to Times Live.
“For them to breath they need to be moving,”
The beach has been closed until the carcass has been removed.
Police spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal, Senior Superintendent Parbhoo Sewpersadh said that the carcass will be cut up into pieces and removed from the beach.
The animal is believed to have been a young whale, estimated at a weight between 4-6 tons, according to News24.
