Susana Nanda, an Indian Forest Service official posted a video on his Twitter account showing a lion running through a busy street, full of people and parked motorbikes in Madhavpur village in Gujarat, India’s westernmost state.

Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion, a subspecies of the African lion which was hunted to near extinction in the 1800s. According to the Gir National Park sanctuary, there were only 20 Asiatic lions left in 1913 and the population has grown to 523 (according to 2015 census). It seems as if the lion running down the road may have been one of these.

The video was posted on Saturday 7 March, however it’s unclear when the incident actually took place.

Some people responded by asking if the lion is safe to which Nanda replied ‘Pretty safe’.
